Learn the Double Crochet (DC)

The double crochet stitch  is one of the most versatile and widely used stitches in crochet. It’s taller and airier than single or half double crochet, making it perfect for lightweight blankets, scarves, and breathable garments like summer cover-ups.

In this beginner-friendly tutorial, Sammi from Yarn Over Hook walks you through how to make a double crochet stitch step-by-step.

What Is a Double Crochet Stitch?

A double crochet (DC) is a basic crochet stitch that creates a tall, airy fabric.

It’s taller than single and half double crochet, which means your projects grow quickly and have plenty of drape.

The DC stitch is used in:

  • Light blankets
  • Summer wear
  • Scarves and shawls
  • Open, airy patterns
  • Granny squares

How to Double Crochet: Step-by-Step for Beginners

These instructions use US crochet terms, and Sammi walks through the process slowly so beginners can follow each step clearly.

Step 1 — Yarn Over

Start by yarning over before inserting your hook into the stitch.

You will now have:

  • Your starting loop
  • The yarn-over strand

This puts you in position to begin the double crochet.

Step 2 — Insert Hook Into the Stitch

Insert your hook under the V of the next stitch in the previous row.

On your hook now:

  • The starting loop
  • The yarn-over strand
  • The stitch (the “V”) you inserted into

Step 3 — Yarn Over and Pull Up a Loop

  • Yarn over and pull the yarn through the stitch only.
  • You should now have three loops on your hook.

Step 4 — Yarn Over and Pull Through Two Loops

  • Yarn over again and pull the yarn through the first two loops only.
  • You’ll now have two loops left on your hook.

Step 5 — Yarn Over and Pull Through the Last Two Loops

  • Yarn over one more time and pull through the remaining two loops.

This completes one double crochet stitch!

Step 6 — Repeat Across the Row

Repeat the same sequence:

  1. Yarn over
  2. Insert your hook
  3. Yarn over, pull up a loop (3 loops)
  4. Yarn over, pull through 2
  5. Yarn over, pull through 2

As you continue, you’ll create an even, airy fabric full of beautiful height and drape.

Double Crochet Tips & Common Mistakes

 Common issues:

  • “My Double Crochets look uneven.”
    • Make sure you’re pulling through the first two loops cleanly before pulling through the final two.
  • “My stitches lean or tilt.”
    • Check your tension—loosen slightly for more consistent height.
  • “My edges are jagged.”
    • Start each row with the correct number of chains.
    • Work cleanly into the first and last stitches.
