How to Double Crochet: Step-by-Step for Beginners
These instructions use US crochet terms, and Sammi walks through the process slowly so beginners can follow each step clearly.
Step 1 — Yarn Over
Start by yarning over before inserting your hook into the stitch.
You will now have:
- Your starting loop
- The yarn-over strand
This puts you in position to begin the double crochet.
Step 2 — Insert Hook Into the Stitch
Insert your hook under the V of the next stitch in the previous row.
On your hook now:
- The starting loop
- The yarn-over strand
- The stitch (the “V”) you inserted into
Step 3 — Yarn Over and Pull Up a Loop
- Yarn over and pull the yarn through the stitch only.
- You should now have three loops on your hook.
Step 4 — Yarn Over and Pull Through Two Loops
- Yarn over again and pull the yarn through the first two loops only.
- You’ll now have two loops left on your hook.
Step 5 — Yarn Over and Pull Through the Last Two Loops
- Yarn over one more time and pull through the remaining two loops.
This completes one double crochet stitch!
Step 6 — Repeat Across the Row
Repeat the same sequence:
- Yarn over
- Insert your hook
- Yarn over, pull up a loop (3 loops)
- Yarn over, pull through 2
- Yarn over, pull through 2
As you continue, you’ll create an even, airy fabric full of beautiful height and drape.
