• Bernat Blanket review – soooo smooth

    Yarn Weight – 6

    Skein – 10.5 oz / 300 g / 220 yds / 201 m

    Hook – 8 mm recommended (I used a 7mm)

As someone who has only been crocheting for about a year, I found Bernat Blanket Yarn a little different from the yarns I’m used to, but in a good way. I am currently making a baby blanket for a little boy due in August using white, sage/mint green, and light taupe colors, and the results have been beautiful so far. Honestly, I keep stopping to admire it, which probably explains why it’s taking me longer to finish than planned.

At first, I found the yarn a bit slow to work with because it was different from my usual yarn choices. However, once I got used to it, it became easier and actually quite fun to crochet with. I used a 7 mm hook instead of a larger size to get tighter stitches, and I am very happy with how the project is turning out. This is definitely not a “blink, and you’ve finished a row” kind of yarn, but it has a cozy pace that I found surprisingly enjoyable.

The standout feature for me is the softness. The yarn feels smooth, buttery, cozy, and comfortable in my hands. It didn’t irritate my skin or cause any discomfort during long crochet sessions. Compared to the yarns I’ve used over the past year, it has a unique glide that makes it feel special to work with. If yarn could be described as having a love language, this one would be physical touch.

One thing I noticed is that while the yarn glides beautifully on the hook, it can be more challenging to pull by hand. Closing my magic circle was stressful because I had to pull much harder than I expected, and I worried the yarn might snap. There was definitely a moment where I paused, held my breath, and prepared myself for disaster. Thankfully, it held up perfectly, even with a lot of tension.

I also had to frog sections of my project a few times (because apparently counting stitches is still an optional skill for me), and I was pleasantly surprised by how well the yarn handled it. It stayed together nicely and did not shed or fall apart during the process, which gave me confidence to make corrections when needed.

The biggest drawback for me is the stitch definition. If you’re someone who enjoys showing off intricate stitch patterns, cables, or textured designs, this yarn may not be your best friend. The fluffy texture tends to blur many of the finer details. That said, what it lacks in stitch visibility, it more than makes up for in softness, coziness, and comfort. This yarn may not win any awards for showing off fancy stitches, but it absolutely deserves a trophy for being soft and squishy.

At approximately $17.99 CAD per skein here in Canada, Bernat Blanket Yarn is definitely not a budget yarn. When I brought multiple skeins to the checkout, my wallet looked at me and asked if we could discuss this decision later. For Canadian crocheters, the cost can add up quickly on larger projects. However, after working with it, I can understand why so many people love it. The exceptional softness, cozy texture, and overall quality help justify the higher price point.

Would I buy it again? Absolutely. My recommendation would be yes—especially if you’re looking for a soft, cozy project and you’re not in a rush. It may work up a little slower than some yarns, but it’s a rewarding and enjoyable pace that produces a beautiful finished result.

The reason I’m giving Bernat Blanket Yarn 4 out of 5 stars instead of 5 is the lack of stitch definition. For some projects, that won’t matter at all, and for others, it may even be a benefit. However, as someone who likes to see the details of the stitches I’ve worked hard to create, I do wish they were a little clearer (especially the white ones). Even with that limitation, this yarn has earned a place in my yarn stash, and I would happily use it again for future blankets and cozy projects.

    Thank you for reading!

I felt the same about the stitch definition, but I feel like that’s also to be expected with such fluffy yarn. the cozy soft feel absolutely makes up for it! 🥰 your blanket looks sooo good! I love the color combo your chose ✨️
